I hope you can take some time and help me out with my research on Cohousing.

1) What cohousing community do you live in and where?

2) How long did it take for the planning process?

3) Did you start the planning process at the beginning (if no, when did you start)?

4) Did your cohousing group . . .
a)	hire a developer/planner/architect/etc. to help out at the very beginning stage of planning and designing
or
b)	did your group finish designing and planning, then hire a developer/planner/architect/etc. to review the plans and construct the community
or
c)	your group did the planning, designing, and construction
[if I’d left out any other option, please let me know]

5) Was your community built by a developer (meaning that you and your fellow community members were not involved in the planning and designing process; you just like the idea and bought the property after it was built)?

6) Do you know everyone in your community?

7) How did you come across (learned of/about) cohousing?

8) Do you have kid(s) living with you at the cohousing community?

(if yes)
8a) how old are your kid(s)

8b) do your kid(s) like living in this environment [for this one, your kid(s) have told you that they like it or not like it]?

8c) do you think they like living in this environment [if your kid didn't give you their opinion]?

8d) do you think they would like to live in the same environment later on in their life?

9) Have your cohousing group ever thought of having a cohousing community school where the members teach the kids (like home schooling, but instead of just the parent, the whole community take part in teaching the kid different subject at different time)?

10) Do you dislike anything about/in your cohousing community (if yes, what and why—if you want to share)?

11) Do you think you will ever leave cohousing?

12) Why did you join cohousing in the first place?

13) does your cohousing community allow rental homes (why--this question is actually something I don't understand, since I feel that it would reduce the 'sense of community' cohousing provides)?

Thank you very much.

I've spent the last year touring cohousing communities all over the country, but particularly in the southeastern US and northern California. I have met some of the most peaceful, nonviolent, kind people there.

Here are my thoughts on our nations' latest gun violence tragedy:

Blacksburg is such a beautiful town. It's bike friendly and full of nature lovers. They have the kindest, friendliest small town folks. The gorgeous New river, which is one of the oldest rivers in the country, runs near it. College students love to float down it and climb the mountains which are close by.

I'm just heartsick about these murders. I worked at Virginia Tech in 1980 in the Chemistry department. My sister volunteered there with countless students and my brother-in-law taught there for years. I dated a police officer there who's still in active duty. I've contacted him to tell him people all over the world are thinking of them. I have college age kids so I particularly empathize with the parents who sent their loved ones to school, expecting them to be safe.

How long will we let American companies profit from the blood of our children?
http://www.vpc.org/studies/vidintr.htm

Please sign this gun control petition in response to the Blacksburg, Virginia tragedy.
http://www.bradynetwork.org/site/Survey?SURVEY_ID=2960&ACTION_REQUIRED=URI_ACTION_USER_REQUESTS

This week I'll light candles for those who were killed, all the more tragic, knowing this was utterly preventable.
from Million Mom March:

"All Americans have the right to be safe from gun violence in their homes, neighborhoods, schools, and places of work and worship.

All children have the right to grow up in environments free from the threat of gun violence.

Gun violence is a public health crisis that harms not only the physical, but also the spiritual, social, and economic health of our families and communities.

The availability and lethality of guns make death or severe injury more likely in domestic violence, criminal activity, suicide attempts, and unintentional shootings.

It is possible to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by gun violence with reasonable, common sense policy."
http://www.millionmommarch.org/aboutus/

The Brady campaign to prevent gun violence has excellent statistics that prove that nations that implement gun control have much less gun violence.
We share expenses for food and utilities. Food is shared and vegetarian, and we have house meals together.

Hi
my name is Zeth and I just joined this tribe in hope of finding a place to stay in Chicago. I will be in student housing until May but then will need to find a new place. I would like to find places and attend events etc to get to know people to try and find the best fit for myself. I am coming from the Bay Area so I know of a lot of co-ops there but none in the Midwest except the housing communities that you have to buy into. I just want to rent. I hope that's enough info. Thanks to everyone who helps.

erika

here is more information: a lot more information....

THE FANTASY:
> > > So, i have this fantasy....
> > >
> > > ask the people who know me: my fantasies tend to be good ones. and
> > > they tend to come true. and they tend to include plenty of people. and
> > > those people tend to be very happy!
> > >
> > > CLOSE, BUT NOT TOO CLOSE
> > > this is a fantasy about living together with the people we enjoy - but
> > > not too close together: close enough to have fun together easily
> > > without driving or planning way ahead. but still have your own house
> > > that is all yours and is private. you can keep your very own kitchen
> > > as clean or not clean as you like. you will not be cleaning anyone
> > > else's bathroom, or fighting over who does. this is not intentional
> > > community, it is not a commune: it is an intentional neighborhood.
> > >
> > > PRIVACY AND SOCIAL INTERACTION
> > > i would love to have my own completely normal house to live in, to
> > > work in, to be solitary in. and then, whenever i feel sociable, walk
> > > outside into the common courtyard and hang out in the hot tub, at the
> > > picnic table, by the barbeque. catch up on how a friend's
> > > day is going, on news about cool things going on in the larger world, join the
> > > cuddle puppy pile in the common house living room, trade a massage, .
> > > would you love to have a house like that too?
> > >
> > > THIS IS THE PLAN:
> > > a co-housing community!
> > > a special alternative co-housing community for all of us who love community,
> > > dance, art, compassionate communication, burning man, HAI as well as
> > > financial stability and security and wise investment.
> > >
> > > sounds too good to be true, doesn't it:
> > > and yet:
> > > we can really do it right here and right now!
> > >
> > > HOW SOON?
> > > we can have this in 6 more months - maybe even may 2007.
> > > you can't believe it, right? look at the timeline and see!
> > >
> > > IS IT POSSIBLE?
> > > i always assumed that these kind of communities would drive me nuts
> > > with too much closeness, they would be too ingrown, they would blow
> > > up.
> > > and guess what? they don't.
> > >
> > > DOES IT WORK?
> > > so i asked lots of questions on the co-housing tour.
> > > now it definitely does happen that some people have issues with other
> > > people - of course that happens. however, it does not end up being a
> > > big deal. as long as people join in with a desire for co-housing,
> > > issues seem to get worked out. only very rarely does anyone leave
> > > because of interpersonal stuff.
> > >
> > > WHY DOES IT WORK?
> > > there are several reasons for this:
> > > there will be about 10 units, 10 sets of people - that is enough mass
> > > so that one does not need to be close with everyone. no pressure to be
> > > buddies with anyone.
> > > and also people like us tend to have busy outside lives too - so we
> > > have a larger community than the one we live in. we get juice and
> > > stimulation from lots of different sources. and we also get support
> > > for dealing with issues from lots of different sources.
> > > this is just a very yummy place to live - it is not your whole world.
> > >
> > > THE BUILDING:
> > > i have a place in mind, although it's not a totally sure thing - it
> > > can't be sure until the units are actually for sale.
> > > this property is actually 2 buildings with a courtyard in the middle.
> > > it has an urban feel to it. there is not a lot of garden and field
> > > space (although that exists next door - perhaps one day that can be
> > > bought and annexed).
> > >
> > > THIS IS THE FANTASY FOR THE ACTUAL PLACE:
> > > 10 townhouses in 2 buildings. with a courtyard in between. will be
> > > made pretty with climbing vines, trees, hanging flower baskets . the
> > > cars are outside, not visible from the courtyard. each townhouse has a
> > > garage, which could also be used as a studio or workshop.
> > >
> > > THE TOWNHOUSES:
> > > the townhouses are 2 bedrooms, a walk-in closet in the master bedroom.
> > > a powder room downstairs. a full bathroom upstairs. each unit has a
> > > big outside patio or balcony.
> > > skylights upstairs. lots of sun and light in all the windows.
> > >
> > > the advantage of a townhouse is no one is on top of you or below you -
> > > dance and bounce all you want! they are not huge: just under 900
> > > square feet. but you have a full kitchen (comes with fridge and stove
> > > and garbage disposal, some microwaves), a dining area, living room and
> > > stairs to upstairs.
> > >
> > > HOW LUXURIOUS ARE THEY?
> > > now, these townhouses are not luxurious right now, they are plain. and
> > > we probably will not be fixing them up before selling them.
> > >
> > > yes, we could fix them up and charge a lot more but we're guessing
> > > that you all are aesthetic types and know exactly what kind of organic
> > > flooring you want. and what kind of colors you want on your walls to
> > > complement your auras.
> > >
> > > so we'll trust that you have vision when you see your plain unit. and
> > > appreciate that the cost is way less so that you can make it beautiful
> > > in exactly the way that you want!
> > >
> > > COMMON SPACE, WHICH IS THE SHARED SOCIAL SPACE:
> > > we will however fix up the common space: the courtyard and the common
> > > house and the exterior of the buildings and the landscaping. we will
> > > check the roof and the plumbing and the wiring and the laundry room.
> > > the budget is prepared by a professional budget preparer and contains
> > > provisions for things that need maintaining. and for thing that will
> > > need major maintenance or replacement in the future.
> > >
> > > TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS:
> > > who takes care of the whole complex: we do! that is we do as much as
> > > we want. the basic structure is laid out in legal documetns. however
> > > we decide whether we want things like the gardening and cleaning the
> > > common areas done by paid people or done by us. same with the bill
> > > paying for the common bills: we can hire a management company or do it
> > > ourselves.
> > >
> > > TIME INVESTMENT:
> > > typically after the complex is settled down there is only one meeting
> > > a month for everyone (about 2 hours) plus some individual chores, that
> > > rotate, for another couple of hours a week plus the occasional work
> > > day. and these opportunities to work together are actually also
> > > opportunities to be together and become a more functional group.
> > >
> > > SOCIAL MEALS:
> > > and then there are meals together in the common house 2-3 times per
> > > week. people cook on a rotating basis. and people sign up to eat for
> > > each individual meal. so you only cook once every few weeks. the
> > > meals range from put-together take-out to very gourmet.
> > >
> > > and, for example, the doyle street co-housing has a wine club. so the
> > > wine does not come out of the common kitty but those who want can have
> > > nice wine.
> > >
> > > SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS:
> > > and then, of course, there are opportunities to play together and
> > > those can be whatever the community wants. however play is as
> > > important as work for bonding!
> > > the common house can be used on a sign-up basis by anyone to create
> > > events. and it looks like it usually works out that the events are
> > > structured so that everyone feels included.
> > >
> > > THE COMMON HOUSE:
> > > we would be using a 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment as our common house.
> > > the kitchen is a good size and has a dishwasher. and the lliving /
> > > dining area is large enough to easily seat everyone - plus friends for
> > > larger parties and to easily convert to a dance space or workshop
> > > space. it's not huge but a generous sized living room.
> > >
> > > the extra bedrooms could be guest room or massage room or rented out
> > > or computer center or ......
> > >
> > > ACCESSIBILITY:
> > > sadly each unit has interior stairs and the common social apartment
> > > has exterior stairs so that this is not a great building for someone
> > > who is mobility impaired.
> > >
> > > THE FINANCIALS:
> > > now, i'm no attorney, that's why an experienced attorney has written up
> > > all the agreements. this is my understanding after significant
> > > research but please do your own research to satisfy yourself about
> > > everything:
> > >
> > > the building will be divided into tenant-in-common (TIC) units.
> > > TIC units are actually very similar to condos:
> > >
> > > when you buy one of the units, you legally own a percentage of the
> > > whole complex. and then you have the legal agreemetns between all the
> > > owners that spells out who owns which unit and all the financial
> > > details.
> > >
> > > FINANCIALLY YOU ARE ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF:
> > > this is the wonderful thing; every owner has their own mortage, that
> > > they have to qualify for. so if someone else defaults, it does not
> > > effect you at all. also you can sell your unit to anyone except they
> > > also have to qualify for their own new mortgage. i already have a
> > > lender lined up ready to go. you can refinance. when you look at the
> > > co-housing communities, you will see that the resale value of the
> > > units is good.
> > >
> > > SELLING IN THE FUTURE:
> > > once a co-housing community is established, people love to buy into
> > > it. the new buyers tend to self-select to fit into the community.
> > > this is why it's so cool for us to create this dream for ourselves: we
> > > can make it what we want. and we do not have to wait to move into
> > > someone else's dream!
> > >
> > > RENTERS:
> > > in existing co-housing developments it has worked for someone to rent
> > > one of the units. (they may end up buying in later .) when an owner
> > > had to live somewhere else for a while. the communities said that the
> > > renters were a positive addition.
> > >
> > > PARAMETERS FOR TIC's:
> > > the loan terms are very slightly less favorable - like 1 point higher
> > > interest rates. and maybe an extra point when you get the mortgage.
> > > it appears that you cannot have a homeowner's line of credit at this
> > > time although that may change as these loans become more common.
> > >
> > > also all the units need to work with this same lender. and if a unit
> > > is sold later, the new owner also needs to stay with this same lender.
> > >
> > > also the downpayment is 25% for TIC's.
> > >
> > > it is preferable to have condos. however it costs a huge amount to
> > > condo-ize a building so that the units would cost a lot more. also in
> > > oakland you simply cannot condo-ize anymore, it's not allowed. so
> > > this is one reason for the affordability: the TIC rather than condo
> > > arrangement.
> > >
> > > THE COST:
> > > ok, remember that this is all fantasy at this time. if you give me
> > > your email, we will keep you posted as the fantasy turns into fact.
> > > real estate investments are a big deal and it is absolutely imperative
> > > to move as slowly as needed to make sure that everything is done
> > > properly. at this time there is no way for anyone to sign up for any
> > > units. there is no way to give money to anyone for any of this at this
> > > time. the legal structure has to be in place before anything else
> > > happens.
> > >
> > > i have not done anything like this before. luckily some people have:
> > > i am hiring them! there is some fabulous expertise and talent out
> > > there. see the section about the team!
> > >
> > >
> > > GENERAL FIGURES:
> > > it's possible that the units might go for as little as $ 250 000 ($
> > > 275 000 including the share for the common apartment) - the exact
> > > price will become more clear as the costs become more clear.
> > >

> > > HERE IS INSPIRATION FOR YOU:
> > > so this is the time to start organizing your finances to collect the
> > > downpayment . get a credit report, and clean up your credit if needed.
> > > talk to family about possible help from there.
> > >
> > > just think: you are creating your secure financial and social future.
> > > once you own the place where you live, you are so much safer in
> > > middle and older age.
> > >
> > >
> > > LET'S BUILD OUR GROUP NOW:
> > > what we can do at this time. and this is a very good thing to do for
> > > building the group; we can start forming a group or groups. we can
> > > get together and talk about dreams and fantasies and hopes and wishes.
> > > we can educate ourselves and each other on what's possible here. we
> > > can learn about legal and financial aspects. we can learn about
> > > co-housing. so do leave your email on this website and let us know if
> > > you want to be part of a group now. and if you'd like to help
> > > organize a group.
> > >
> > > BUS TOUR TO LEARN ABOUT CO-HOUSING:
> > > we could even organize bus tour of the local co-housing communities in
> > > the east bay! oakland has more of them than any other city in the
> > > whole country.
> > >
> > > LOCATION:
> > > the building that i have my eye on for this purpose is in the
> > > fruitvale area of oakland. a few blocks off 580 on the bay side of the
> > > freeway. amazingly one does not hear the freeway. the area is not a
> > > great area, however it is getting cleaned up. a new huge gourmet health
> > > food store , farmer joe's has just opened 6 blocks away.
> > >
> > > there is an advantage to being in a not-so-great area: the neighbors
> > > are more welcoming. in a fancy area, the neighbors might get anxious
> > > about something unusual happening in an apartment buildig. in this
> > > area, the neighbors would welcome us as the good neighbors that we
> > > will be. and they would be more tolerant of people who wear unusual
> > > clothes or who like to chant with their windows open.
> > >
> > > we would be 1.5 miles from the fruitvale bart station on
> > > bicycle-friendly streets. and 5 blocks from the new farmer joe's. the
> > > local area, the dimond area, has a neighborhood association and email
> > > list and activities.
> > >
> > > itis 5 miles to berkely and to the bay bridge.
> > >
> > > this area is mixed with all ethnic groups. and has owner-occupied
> > > single family homes as well as other apartment buildings.
> > >
> > > PROPOSED TIME LINE :
> > > the TIC process is starting now. in 2-3 months the california
> > > department of real estate (DRE) gives us the 'pink paper' which means
> > > that we can start marketing but we cannot actually sell. in about 6
> > > months we get the final papers from the DRE and we can then actually
> > > sell the units.
> > >
> > > this process includes the legal and the financial structure for the tic.
> > >
> > > and then we also need to work with the existing tenants to see which
> > > of them would want to buy in and which of them would like to receive
> > > financial and organizational help in relocating to another rental.
> > > luckily there are lots of wonderful and affordable rental units
> > > available in oakland right now.
> > >
> > > TO DO IN THE MEANTIME:
> > > in the meantime we all can work on collecting a group, on creating the
> > > co-housing part of the structure (lots of amazing people resources
> > > available for that too!).
> > >
> > > help prospective buyers (once we have the pink paper) get ready to
> > > apply for a loan and prepare the downpayment.
> > >
> > > we have some good ideas for improving the exterior of the building and the > > > landscaping - there will be some pictures available.
> > > if you like to be involved in that, that would be great!
> > >
> > >

Mother of two... Co-creator of much... Seeking space to share, learn, grow, and commune in. I'm open to any location as long as there are no alterior motives, good people around, and the ability to get around, and sustain myself. I love the unknown and am not sure where I am being guided but I am definitely being driven somewhere other than where I am at this moment.

My Children are chill, clean, respectful, and in tune. My son is nine, my daughter is 7 weeks.

My Son and I have travelled throughout Southern Africa, and lived from our own place in Cape Town... to backpackers... to communal farms in the last three years. Including Vipassana & Permaculture... Not to mention for over a year of that I sold my creations at festivals... He has met all walks of life and as long as you are a good person with good intent I doubt he will be shocked by you or anything that you do. On top of that he is in school all day five days a week... He listens well and learns quickly.

My Daughter so far is a very peacfeul curious little wonder who likes to rest and listen to Reggae... Her trumpet only sounds when hungry or in need of a diaper change... which I attend to very quickly. If I want her to go to sleep I must turn the music up... I guess I channeled the perfect child after all.

We are originally from New Orleans but currently hail from San Francisco... Been travelling in Africa for three years.

I'm a mature individual (30 Pisces/Fire Dragon/Yellow Magnetic Sun) that thrives on positive communication... Peace... Compassion. I have little space for drama as I find it terribly unecessary when you have grown to a degree where you love yourself and are at peace with your direction in life. Group meditation, & or yoga are a plus... I am not materialistic, I live simply and I like my free time... I eat organic, and vegan though you can do whatever you like I am not judgemental or self righteous.

If you are one to tell people what they should be doing with there lives I have already done it... Had the convertible, the suit, the plastic, and the loft. Owned the Cafe... Organized the Events... Performed on the Stage...I have done it. So despite what life you think I should have you must be willing to accept the life I want for myself...

People say.. a woman with two kids she should have her own place and be doing whatever to provide that... So I trade my time with my children to provide what is acceptable by a society at the cost of letting other people raise them all for what? More than we need... because it is what: it is acceptable to mainstream society. No thanks I would like to find a nice room no bigger than our hut in Africa was... in a cool area with some cool people... and be as available for them as possible have the time to do my art healing and creations... and be able to take the little one to work with me. Thats the choice I have made and I think that is no reason to judge...

I am an artist on the path wanting to give as much time as possible to my children & trying to learn as much as I can so that the next time I embark on the path I have gotten a few things out of the way.. I want to live by my passions and if it means I have less oh well. As I told the tribe in Africa... When I had everything I had nothing and now that I have nothing I have everything... No matter what I will always take care of myself and my responsibilities... I plan to add nutrition and healing to the Vast array of my capabilities...
Jewelry
Clothing
Holistic Cosmetics
Paintings
Photography
Graphic Design
Music
Vocals
Spoken Word
Performance
Tarot
I-Ching
Oracle
Crystals
I simply need to put down roots so that I can manifest my new existence back here in America... Does one have a room in a location where my skills could be of service & or appreciated?

If the location is in SF I can provide 1st months rent, Deposit... and can gaurantee my bills and food every month... If the location is elsewhere I would obviously be relocating so I would likely need to postpone the deposit until I get settled and working which would be very quickly mind you. I do have a job that I can take anywhere. Though I will need an internet connection for that, unless I can do work exchange or teaching children... and I am also quite willing to do any kind of work needed towards sustainability.

Sound off to the Universe... Is there anybody out there.
Jesaka, Azrad & Zion

Hi everyone,
Though I am interested in ICs my current situation is much smaller! I own a house in progress in what is left of rural Chatham County. Right now my partner and I live in the main house in construction and we have a friend living in a dome. We also have a buried 40' shipping container that is currently being used as storage for the construction components that may become my metal studio in the coming year.
I have a large basement apartment with a huge bathroom, kitchenette, and a/c that can be completed in a matter of weeks. By mid-September I will have the time and funds to complete this space. By this time next year we will have a second story and three more bed rooms!
We are seeking kind, outside the box folks that want to live in the area - 15 miles from Chapel Hill and UNC, 25 miles from Raleigh and NCState. Eventually we will be wandering off to travel and to create a similar environment as this home in Central America. We will need keepers of this space and people to share life with.
We have basic requirements - non violence, no white powders, control over whatever other subtances you choose to put in your body, smoking outside, and a desire to live communally and comfotably! We have animals, garden spaces, altars, studio space, ponds, a sweat lodge, and a stream called Temple Creek. We are very kid-friendly and may have one of our own in the coming years.
I would like to start meeting people now so we can get to know eachother and see if our plans can coincide! Thanks so much everyone!

Well I've had this ad up for about three weeks now: "House for rent on burner property". In that time I've had two couples come and look. Both dudes were DJs. Both said it didn't have enough space for all their gear.

So now I'm thinking about the idea of a "burner hostel". People running up and down the coast would have a place to stop-over in Portland, burn some wood and meet like-minded folk. I may have to buy some bunkbeds and lockers. I don't know. I'd like to do something creative. I have two houses on the same enclosed private property on the edge of Forest Park.

There's a thing called "the couch-exchange network"? that's sort of similar. What they do is you pay to be on a list and exchange you have free places to stay wherever you go in any city. If someone is a creep on either side they are removed. If I can't find the right tenant(s) I may just do something for good karma points.

If anyone likes the idea I'd be happy to hear feedback.

One in the eastbay about 12 years ago and one in Cotati here in sonoma county just about a year and a half ago. I would dearly love to live in co-housing again. I will eventually be able to buy into a place, but probably not for another five years or so. In the mean time I'm ready to rent.
I also lived in a communal household for a year and a half back in my early 20's, and also did civil dis-obedience back then, so I have a some experience with NVC and consensus process too. Would love to hear from you folks in private email here if you have any leads.

I work part time doing massage for a large hotel in SF, but also have my own private clients. I can see them out of my current massage studio space, but would love to be able to see clients from home, too. I'm a laid back, chatty sort of roommate who loves to cook at home and bake bread to share with my roomies.

I'm highly organized, having a very recent past life professionally organizing for small businesses. I come with my own collection of houseplants and both me and the green things love lots of sunshine and natural light.

I'm looking for rent of no more than $500/mo. Shared cooking staples or periodic shared house dinners would be welcome. In the very least I like the feeling of being in a community of people rather than a bunch of strangers who happen to be renting the other rooms.

Sublets okay. Looking for July 1, slightly flexible. San Francisco near transportation prefered, E. Bay near BART (walking distance) okay too.
Rent = $646/month
Available May 1, 2005.

ABOUT THE PENTHOUSE
We have WAY more common space than most shared housing situations and a friendly, creative, stable household. The penthouse takes up the entire top (5th) floor of a 1920's apartment building, and was built with an eye for design and a lot of open space. It is recently restored and in beautiful condition. The apartment includes:
Large livingroom
Diningroom
Sunroom/Foyer
1.5 Baths
Beautiful Gourmet Kitchen,
Private Laundry Room with free washer & dryer.
A back hallway which allows the common space to be separated in several different ways
DSL with wireless internet
House cleaner every 2 weeks

Our Kitchen is a gourmet's dream with a 5-burner gas range, dishwasher, built-in microwave, reverse osmosis water filtration system providing purified hot and cold running water, garbage disposal, and built-in winerack.

Some of the other extras include plenty of windows with stunning views on all sides, built-in shelving and working fireplace in livingroom, a large bathtub and an adjacent stand-up shower stall (with dual-shower heads) in one of the two bathrooms, hardwood floors throughout, and dimmer switches on all the lights for mood lighting.

NEIGHBORHOOD
We are located in the Lower Haight, nestled between Hayes Valley, the Castro, and Haight/Ashbury. Cafes, restaurants, bars/clubs, hair salons, unique little shops and bus access to anywhere in the city are all right outside our front door. There is a little Whole Foods Market across the street and Safeway is only a short walk away.

WHO LIVES HERE
We are 3 mid-20's to early-30's types:

Eve - a bi-gendered makeup artist specializing in gender illusion who occasionally works out of the home dressing up trannies. Eve is also a freelance television journalist, budding cook, Trannyshack and Burning Man regular, world traveler, Vespa lover and all around sweetheart. He/she will frequently be found wearing crazy costumes just for fun.

Kati - middle school art teacher, aspiring photographer, fiercely opinionated, good cook when she gets around to it, crafty Taurus with a Wonder Woman tattoo. She's part of the dynamic duo--Kati and Catrina, that is.

Catrina - queer woman of color, lover of animals and nature. She works part-time at a non-profit and freelances from home part-time. She loves to eat, cook, entertain and be entertained. Loves living at the Penthouse. Shares a community garden plot, car, scooter, motorcycle and bedroom with her lovey.

Soup & Sadie - both fuzzy and four legged, they usually get mistaken for cats, but they're really freeloading housemates.

WHAT WE WANT
We're looking for friendly, responsible, creative additions to our home. Cooks and plant lovers win extra points with us. We're not freaked out by much, but bad drug habits, constant TV watching, and drama are not our style. No cigarette smoking in the apartment, but we are 420 friendly. You must be queer friendly and transgender friendly - if that makes you uncomfortable this is not the place for you. Otherwise give us a call/sends us an email with a little bit of information about yourself and let's talk! No cats or dogs, please.
Got some new exciting information for you - have a read!

As you know - my "big picture" is to eliminate expenses through healthy choices with a consumable product. It is true, I have been researching a company over the past 4 months after first being exposed to them at the Health symposium in the latter of 2004.

Shelley and I have decided to add it to our expense elimination program for the following reasons:
1) It is an amazing substitution to products we purchase weekly and highly consumable.
2) The products are highly versatile and create a very healthy environment for our home and bodies.
3) The testimonials are incredible both here in Canada and the US ( I witnessed it firsthand at the Richmond Private Golf & Country Club at a hosted event by the top Canadian Distributor)
4) The products replace the following products we use daily ( which by the way may have harmful ingredients such as Propylene Glycol, DEA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Alcohol, Aluminum, Talc and many more. Here are the everyday products they replace:
a) Body soap, hand soap, bath soap,
b) toothpaste
c) Shampoo, Conditioner, Moisturizer ( body, face )
d) First Aid applications, Sunburn applications,
e) Greens products and Flax products
f) Laundry soap, Dish soap
g) Body deodorant, under arm deodorant
h) House cleaners, auto cleaners
and the list goes on........

To sum up: Many applications with health and safety paramount, very exciting, lateral spending from purchases we make weekly, monthly etc. ( no new added expense! ) with the ability to reduce everyones expenses, increase vitality and overall health and create a healthy harmonious home & body environment, only in the US and Canada presently and ofcourse fits in with Shelley and I's Expense Elimination Program we have implemented for 2005.

Footnote: I polled a few of my most sceptical friends that have always looked down on products such as this and here is the responses I received:

"Jay, from all the products you have shown us - these products interest us because it just makes sense"

"Shelley and Jay, you've really hit something big with this - we're definitely looking at this product line for our family and home"

"We're interested! When can we have a look at this website!"

"My wife who absolutely has no time for these products but is considering this line because of it's logic and the lateral spending of monies we spend already with the opportunity to get it really healthy as we progress in age"

I think you will agree that this has the potential to serve your body in a way we have never tapped into before, it's not a fad or a trend just a healthy solution to live in a very non-toxic environment.

If you check out www.JaysVentures.com you will see it partnered up with our Xango Juice nutritional line - a fine addition.
Great home/people. good size room in 5 bed home (super bargain)the rent is cheap-we've been here a while.

Bonarium is in search of 1 beautiful, easy-going, kind person to
join our home. The room is very nice with wood walls, carpeted floor, good light, a closet, window, walkout sliding glass door to a deck and more. The rest of the house is an interesting structure with unique architecture that resembles an
aquarium (maybe I’m lying or you just have to see it). There are 5
bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, large foyer, a great kitchen to cook and eat in,
laundry room, back patio, edible garden, fireplace, wood-burning stove,
and lush foliage surrounding the house. We are 2 women and 3 men (age
23-41, median=31), a cat and a dog (the amazing OSCAR!), and we love to learn from
each other's diverse interests and backgrounds...artists, teachers,
healers, and camping experts. Habibi the cat lives outside and in one of
the rooms, and Oscar the dog roams around loving everyone. Some of our
common interests include riding bikes, camping, cooking delicious
organic meals, traveling, and making ourselves happy. We all love being part
of a community of kind people with unlimited potential. We are looking
for another member of the family (prossibly another woman to balance out the house a bit?), who will come in and shake things up
and be sure to put their personality into the house. The radio is
usually tuned to 94.1, we brew tasty beer, have dsl, play music, host
potluck dinners, hang out for Sunday breakfasts, and laugh a lot. Close to
BART, parks, coffee, pizza (the Splitter), bars, and restaurants.
Basically, you can walk anywhere to get anything.

The room will be available by Feb 1st.

We are interested in long term roomates (preferabally at least 10 months or longer-but we are on a month to month lease.) We are interested in a 2 month trial basis, where you can check us out and vica verca to see if its a great fit.

We are somewhat communal, but we don't share food expenses formally, yet.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you're looking for in your new

Ideally, it would have communal meals and activities that he can opt-in for. While the medical care backup offered by an assisted care facility might be nice, I thought that cohousing might also work. Does anyone know of a Bay Area cohousing community that includes that kind of age diversity?

My name is Alex Goodman and I am a graduate student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Florida. I am trying to gather an extensive list of possible case studies for groups that exemplify this kind of eco-community scheme for a research paper I’m doing in my Environment and Society course, which will hopefully become part of my dissertation framework. I sure would appreciate any and all help with generating this list, as one person can only know so many people and ideas. Some examples I am currently using would be cohousing, community supported agriculture, and the local currency/bartering networks. I know there are tons more out there! Thanks, ALEX – alexevasion@yahoo.com
