Does a 'sense of community' help you become more aware of your surroundings and therefore you would take better care of your environment?

Yes, most definitely. It also frees me up to know less about some areas because I know that neighbors I know and trust are taking care of it. Those with a green thumb work on the garden. I mow the lawn. We each focus on our own pieces of the puzzle. So in one sense I'm LESS aware of my surroundings.
